Yorkshire Buses Ceases Operations Amid Fuel Crisis and Rising Costs

A major UK bus operator, Yorkshire Buses, has announced it will cease all operations from Wednesday, April 1, 2026, citing unsustainable rising costs, including fuel prices exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East crisis. The company made the announcement via social media, stating that services will end at 8pm tonight.

Announcement and Reasons for Closure

On Facebook, Yorkshire Buses posted: "Important announcement: With the continued rising costs including fuel and many other significant increases, it has become unsustainable for us to continue. Yorkshire Buses will cease operations from 8pm tonight. We thank you for your business and support over the years."

The operator elaborated that after much thought, the decision was driven by forecasted further cost increases, making it impossible to continue. "This has not been an easy decision, and it is one we have fought hard to avoid however with further cost increases forecast on the horizon the decision has had to be made sooner rather than later," they added.

Impact on Community and Services

Yorkshire Buses emphasized its role beyond transport, highlighting community connections. "From the very beginning, Yorkshire Buses has been about more than just transport. It has been about community, connection, and the people we have had the privilege to serve every single day," the statement read.

The company expressed gratitude to passengers, staff, and partners, noting: "We want to take this moment to sincerely thank each and every one of you, our passengers, nurses, supporters, staff, and partners and the rest for your loyalty, kindness, and support over the years."

Alternative Arrangements and Affected Services

Metro, the local transport authority, is working to minimize disruption by seeking alternative operators for affected routes. The following services are impacted:

  • Service 30 – Horsforth to Pudsey (off-peak service)
  • Service 61 – St James Hospital to Hunslet (South Leeds Stadium)
  • Service 116 – Leeds to Ossett to Wakefield
  • Service 118 – Wakefield to White Rose Centre (evenings only; daytime service operated by Arriva is unaffected)
  • Service 212 – Wakefield to Batley to Dewsbury
  • Service 1 – Leeds to Wakefield

This closure marks a significant shift in regional transport, with authorities scrambling to ensure continuity for commuters and residents reliant on these bus routes.
