Residents of Birmingham are fortunate that on any sunny day, a short journey can transport them to the green and pleasant countryside for a change of scenery. While the city boasts numerous green spaces perfect for picnics, sometimes a bit of adventure is needed. Nestled on the edge of the Worcestershire countryside, a charming neighbourhood offers all the vibrant, independent vibes of Birmingham's coolest suburbs while serving as a gateway to some of the region's most delightful walks.
Aston Fields: A Hidden Gem
If you have ever taken the train to Bromsgrove, you will know that the station is a half-hour walk from the town centre. Fortunately, the residential area where the train drops you, Aston Fields, is so lovely that you might never make it past its cluster of independent bars and restaurants. Among them is Bailey's of Bromsgrove, an awesome bar that is a must-visit.
Fuso: Family-Run Dining
One standout is Fuso, a family-run spot offering big breakfasts on its sunny terrace, Sunday roasts with all the trimmings, steak nights, pizza, hanging kebabs, and comfort food. Customers praise the generous portions, friendly service, and relaxed atmosphere, especially on the outdoor terrace. Fuso serves full English breakfasts, breakfast burritos, loaded flatbreads, muffins, and waffle stacks. Occasionally, they offer a 'kids eat free' weekend deal to keep costs down.
Fuso is located on New Road, just around the corner from award-winning coffee house Bremi's, where you can grab coffee and sweet treats to go before heading into the countryside.
Countryside Walks: Tardebigge Locks
You should definitely consider a walk in the countryside. Tardebigge Locks are a five-minute drive from Aston Fields, but if you have your walking boots on, you can stroll from Bromsgrove train station down the Monarch's Way on a circular route through Finstall Park. Tardebigge is famous for having the longest flight of locks in the country, with the Canal and River Trust providing historical information for a self-guided walk. Thirty locks, open countryside views, and church vistas await.
