Deepal S05 EV Makes UK Debut with Competitive £38k Starting Price

Chinese automotive manufacturer Changan has introduced its second model to the UK market in just over six months, the Deepal S05 electric SUV. Priced from £37,990, this vehicle aims to capture attention with a premium interior, robust performance capabilities, and an extensive seven-year warranty, positioning itself as a compelling option in the growing electric vehicle segment.

Brand Background and UK Development

While Changan may be a new name to many British drivers, the company boasts over four decades of car manufacturing experience in China. For the past 11 years, it has operated a research and development facility in Birmingham, which plays a pivotal role in tailoring models like the Deepal S05 for the demanding UK and European markets. This localised development ensures the SUV is rigorously tested and fine-tuned to meet specific road conditions and regulatory standards.

Nick Thomas, Changan's UK managing director, emphasises that this Birmingham base is crucial for adapting vehicles to regional preferences, highlighting the brand's commitment to quality and relevance. The Deepal S05 follows the earlier S07 model, offering a more compact alternative with similar premium features.

Design and Specifications

The Deepal S05 is available in two variants: a rear-wheel-drive model starting at £37,990 and an all-wheel-drive version priced from £39,990. At launch, optional extras are limited to a panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar, simplifying the buying process. To build consumer confidence, Changan provides a class-leading seven-year or 100,000-mile vehicle warranty, complemented by an eight-year or 124,000-mile battery warranty.

Stylistically, the S05 draws inspiration from aircraft design, featuring a "flying wing" front end with slim LED daytime running lights and aeroplane-wing-shaped bumpers. This theme extends to the rear, where a V-shaped spoiler and central brake lamp echo an aerodynamic silhouette. Additional futuristic touches include frameless doors and an illuminated logo, though some may find the flush-mounted, pop-out electric door handles somewhat gimmicky.

Inside, the cabin adopts a minimalist approach with body-hugging, heated and ventilated vegan leather seats. A 15.4-inch central rotating touchscreen serves as the control hub for infotainment, navigation, and safety functions, capable of tilting 15 degrees toward the driver or passenger. While physical controls are sparse, the vehicle includes an augmented reality head-up display and intuitive voice and gesture controls to enhance driver focus.

Performance and Practicality

On the road, the Deepal S05 delivers a satisfying driving experience, with brisk acceleration and quiet operation thanks to extensive soundproofing. The rear-wheel-drive model produces 268 bhp, achieving 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds and offering over 300 miles of range. The all-wheel-drive variant boosts output to 429 bhp, reducing the 0-62 mph time to just 5.5 seconds.

Despite its compact dimensions, the S05 proves highly practical for families. With rear seats folded, it provides up to 1,250 litres of cargo space, accommodating items like pushchairs or luggage. A front boot ("frunk") offers additional storage for charging cables or wet gear, complete with a drainage hole. The SUV also features vehicle-to-load technology for powering external devices and an optional towbar capable of pulling up to 1,600 kg.

Safety and Advanced Features

Safety is a strong suit for the Deepal S05, which has earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating. It comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control with lane centring, a 360-degree camera with parking aids, automatic emergency braking, collision warnings, and blind-spot monitoring. These features are designed to reduce driver fatigue and enhance overall safety on both motorways and urban roads.

Final Verdict

The Deepal S05 makes a formidable entry into the UK electric SUV market, combining striking design, a premium interior, and impressive practicality. While the reliance on touchscreen controls and gimmicky door handles may not appeal to all, its strong performance, extensive warranty, and competitive pricing offer genuine value for buyers seeking an electric vehicle that stands out in a crowded field.
