E.ON Next cuts overnight EV charging to under 7p per kWh

E.ON Next has confirmed a new overnight electric vehicle (EV) charging rate of less than 7p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), offering households with driveways potential annual savings of up to £462. The energy supplier, which serves households in Birmingham, announced that its Next Drive Smart tariff now provides the lowest off-peak EV charging rate of any major supplier in the UK.

New tariff details and savings

The Next Drive Smart tariff charges customers 6.9p per kWh between midnight and 6am, just under 7p. A second option, Next Drive Fixed, offers an off-peak rate of 8.5p per kWh during the same hours. According to E.ON, drivers using Next Drive Smart can save an average of £462 per year compared to charging under the current energy price cap, while Next Drive Fixed users can save £423 annually.

These savings apply only to customers who have their own driveway and a home charger, allowing them to avoid relying on public charging points. E.ON told Birmingham Live: "For drivers with a home charger, that means lower energy bills without using less energy overall - just shifting charging to overnight."

Customer eligibility and flexibility

To benefit from the reduced rates, households must have a dedicated off-street parking space and a compatible home charger. The tariff is designed to make EV charging more accessible and affordable, particularly for those who can charge at home. Gráinne Regan, Propositions Director at E.ON Next, said: "As more households switch to electric, we want charging at home to be simple, affordable and something drivers don't have to think twice about. Next Drive Smart makes charging an EV one of the cheapest habits a household can have."

Regan added: "We want every driver to see real savings from day one and to make the switch to electric feel like the smart, easy choice it should be." The tariff includes no exit fees, giving customers flexibility if their circumstances change.

Additional benefits and day rate

Next Drive Smart V7.1 features two rates: an off-peak rate of 6.9p per kWh from midnight to 6am, and a day rate of 31.1p per kWh from 6am to midnight. Customers on Next Drive Fixed can save £423 per year compared to charging on the energy price cap. Additionally, E.ON Next offers a free one-year subscription to Zoom EV, an online platform that provides benefits and discounts on public charging, parking, car hire, and other services.

The new tariff positions E.ON Next as a competitive option for EV owners in Birmingham and across the UK, aiming to simplify the transition to electric vehicles while delivering tangible savings.
