Honda and Sony Abandon Afeela 1 Electric Car Launch Following Strategic Review

In a significant development for the automotive industry, Honda has announced the cancellation of its planned launch of another electric vehicle, the Afeela 1, which was being developed in partnership with Sony. This decision marks a notable setback for the joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), which was established to innovate in the electric mobility sector.

Strategic Reassessment Leads to Production Halt

Sony Honda Mobility confirmed that it will be halting production of the Afeela 1, as well as its second model, due to Honda's recent reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy. This strategic shift, announced on March 12, 2026, has impacted the availability of certain technologies and assets that were originally planned to be provided by Honda.

A statement from SHM explained: "Since its establishment in September 2022, SHM has aimed to develop and sell high value-added mobility products and to provide mobility-related services by combining the technologies, expertise, and development capabilities of Sony and Honda. However, as a result of Honda’s reassessment, SHM will not be able to utilize certain technologies and assets that were originally planned."

The statement further clarified that this change has left SHM without a viable path to bring the models to market as initially intended. Consequently, the company has determined that proceeding with the launch is no longer feasible.

Refunds for Reservation Holders

As a direct result of this decision, Sony Honda Mobility will issue full refunds for reservation fees received from current holders of reservations for the Afeela 1 in California, United States. This move aims to address the concerns of early adopters who had shown interest in the vehicle.

The Afeela 1 was positioned as a premium electric vehicle with a starting price of $89,900, approximately £67,543. It featured advanced specifications, including:

  • More than 40 sensors for enhanced road safety
  • An estimated range of up to 300 miles on a single charge

Impact on Honda's Electric Vehicle Presence

This cancellation highlights Honda's current challenges in the electric vehicle market. Notably, Honda does not currently sell any new electric cars in the United Kingdom, underscoring the broader implications of this strategic reassessment for its global electrification efforts.

The decision to scrap the Afeela 1 reflects the evolving dynamics in the automotive industry, where companies are continuously adjusting their strategies in response to technological advancements, market demands, and competitive pressures. It remains to be seen how Honda and Sony will navigate their partnership moving forward, and what alternative plans they might develop for future electric mobility initiatives.
