MG Makes Bold Return to Premium Electric Vehicle Sector
MG has significantly strengthened its position in the UK automotive market and is now aggressively targeting the premium sector with its latest electric vehicle offerings. The brand, known for its resurgence in recent years, has reintroduced premium models under the '6' range, marking a strategic shift towards higher-end vehicles. Notably, two out of three variants in this range exceed £40,000, making them subject to the £410 annual Expensive Car Supplement on road tax, underscoring their upscale positioning.
Introducing the MGS6 EV: A Premium SUV Powerhouse
The MGS6 EV exemplifies MG's premium ambitions as a large SUV that combines distinctive styling with impressive performance. It features a 77kWh battery that delivers an excellent range, alongside a suite of hi-tech gadgetry, though some of these features can be occasionally annoying. The top-of-the-range twin-motor model is currently priced at just under £44,000, available in SE and Trophy trims. Both trims offer long range and rear-wheel drive, except for this specific twin-motor variant.
This model provides a truly exhilarating driving experience, with dual motors generating a maximum of 361bhp, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just five seconds. Coupled with a claimed maximum range of 329 miles, it presents a compelling package for performance-oriented buyers.
Design and Aerodynamic Efficiency
Beyond performance, the MGS6 EV boasts a sleek and sporty design that is aerodynamically efficient. The front design includes an active grille shutter and ultra-slim headlights that create a predatory appearance. Aero wheel covers are also integrated, claimed to add nearly 30 miles of range. The sporty profile is enhanced by a full-length panoramic roof, a full-width light bar at the rear, and stylish 20-inch alloy wheels.
Interior Luxury and Advanced Technology
The interior offers a high-end feel with ambient lighting, powered and heated suede-style seats flanking a floating centre console that includes storage space and a phone charging mat. Two screens dominate the dashboard: a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and a 10.25-inch display providing real-time driver information. The touchscreen controls major functions such as infotainment, connectivity, apps, and navigation. Additional features include a Head-Up Display (HUD) and a 360° HD Surround View Camera.
While the display is clear, it is not without flaws, as some functions are not always displayed intuitively—a common issue as technology advances. The MG Pilot Safety Suite, accessed via the touchscreen, manages driver assistance systems like Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Blind Spot Detection. However, the constant alerts and voice warnings can be distracting and difficult to disable, with the overspeed limit warning sometimes activating at speeds over just 20mph.
To mitigate distractions, the vehicle retains plenty of physical controls, including those on the multi-function steering wheel. Otherwise, the interior is highly commendable, offering ample head and legroom, with ambient lighting and the panoramic roof creating a pleasant environment for occupants.
On-Road Performance and Handling
On the road, the MGS6 EV delivers blistering acceleration paired with decent handling for an SUV, showing minimal body lean in corners despite a relatively soft ride. The claimed range is notably accurate in real-world testing, with an estimated 270 miles against a WLTP figure of 301 miles for this model. Drivers can customize the car's behavior using five drive modes and a true one-pedal driving mode.
Practicality and Charging Capabilities
This vehicle is designed as a proper family-sized SUV, offering exceptional space. The boot provides a class-leading 674 litres, expandable to 1,910 litres with the seats folded for van-like capacity. Additionally, the front 'frunk' offers an extra 124 litres of storage. A Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows powering household electric items, such as a grill or kettle.
Charging, however, is slower compared to competitors. Both variants support rapid charging, achieving a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 38 minutes using a 150kW DC fast charger.
Verdict: A Strong Contender in the Premium EV Market
The MGS6 EV represents a fine blend of style, space, startling performance, and practicality, proving that MG can compete with established premium brands. Potential buyers should be prepared to manage the occasionally irritating safety alerts to fully enjoy this impressive vehicle.
