Drivers across the West Midlands are being warned to expect significant disruption on the motorway network this week due to a series of overnight closures.
Essential Maintenance Work Causes Delays
National Highways, the government agency responsible for England's motorways, is carrying out essential maintenance work. This necessary upkeep will result in temporary closures of carriageways, slip roads, and link-roads throughout the region.
To minimise the impact on commuters and other road users, all work is scheduled to take place overnight during the quietest periods for travel.
Full Schedule of Motorway Closures
The closures are in effect from Wednesday, November 26, until Saturday, November 29. Here is the complete day-by-day breakdown of the planned works.
Wednesday, November 26
On the M42, the northbound exit slip road at Junction 6 (Bickenhill Interchange) will be shut from 9pm until 6am. Additionally, the southbound entry slip road at Junction 9 (Dunton Interchange) is also closed during the same hours.
For the M5, a more substantial closure is planned. The carriageway between Junction 3 (Quinton Interchange) and Junction 4 (Lydiate Ash Interchange) will be fully closed from 9:30pm until 6am.
Thursday, November 27
Thursday night into Friday morning brings a more extensive list of disruptions.
On the M42, the link-road from Junction 8 (Coleshill Directional Triangle) to M6 Junction 4a will be closed from 9pm until 5am on Friday. The northbound exit slip at Junction 6 (Bickenhill Interchange) and the southbound entry slip at Junction 9 (Dunton Interchange) will again be closed from 9pm until 6am.
The M5 will see a repeat of the previous night's closure, with the southbound carriageway between Junction 3 and Junction 4 shut from 9:30pm until 6am.
A major closure is also scheduled for the M6. The northbound carriageway between Junction 5 (Castle Bromwich Interchange) and Junction 6 (Spaghetti Junction) will be closed from 9pm until 6am on Friday.
Friday, November 28
The final set of closures for the week takes place on Friday night.
The M42 will have the northbound exit slip road at Junction 6 (Bickenhill Interchange) closed once more, this time from 9pm until 5am on Saturday.
On the M6, the northbound carriageway between Junction 5 and Junction 6 will again be closed, from 9pm Friday until 6am Saturday.
Plan Ahead for Your Journey
National Highways advises all motorists to check their routes before travelling and to allow extra time for their journeys. While the works are timed to cause the least amount of inconvenience, significant delays are expected in and around the closure areas. Drivers are urged to follow the signed diversion routes for their safety and to ensure the efficient completion of this vital maintenance.
