A man has been arrested following a crash on the M6 northbound after a car was allegedly stolen by two men wielding a machete. Staffordshire Police confirmed that officers were alerted to the incident early on Thursday, May 14.
Incident Details
The blue Audi S3 was reported stolen from West Bromwich by two men armed with a machete. The vehicle was spotted on the M6 northbound between junctions 12 and 13 in Staffordshire at around 5am. It subsequently collided with a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), after which the two suspects fled on foot.
Police Response
Armed police, the National Police Air Service, and a dog unit were dispatched to the scene. The HGV driver was taken to hospital by ambulance, while a second man was examined by paramedics before being taken into custody by West Midlands Police.
A section of the M6 was temporarily closed following the incident. A Staffordshire Police spokesperson stated: "A man has been arrested by West Midlands Police following a collision involving a suspected stolen car on the M6 in Staffordshire this morning. We were called at 4.50am by WMP colleagues after reports of a suspicious vehicle. A car had been stolen in West Bromwich by two men, reportedly with a machete. The owner was unhurt."
"Our officers spotted the blue Audi S3 on the M6 northbound between junctions 12 and 13. The car then collided with a HGV near Stafford services, with two men fleeing on foot. Firearms officers, a dog unit, and the National Police Air Service attended. The HGV driver was taken to hospital. One man was found, checked by paramedics, and detained by WMP officers shortly after."
Police assisted Highways in recovering the vehicles and left the scene at around 9am. The M6 northbound between junctions 14 and 15 has since reopened.
