Train services to and from Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International remain severely disrupted today, more than 36 hours after a freight wagon derailed in the West Midlands. The line between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury is still closed as Network Rail works to repair extensive damage to the tracks.
Derailment Details
The incident occurred at around 8:30 PM on Tuesday, May 5, when a single wagon derailed at slow speed in the Oxley area of Wolverhampton. No injuries were reported, but the derailment caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure.
Service Disruptions
Passengers travelling to and from Birmingham New Street face reduced services, with rail replacement buses operating between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury, as well as Telford Central. Transport for Wales services between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury remain suspended.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Railway stated: "Following a conference, it has been confirmed that the line will not be reopening today. The same arrangements for rail replacement services and train timetables are currently being implemented by our control team." The spokesperson added that it is unclear when the situation will be resolved.
Network Rail Statement
Network Rail Birmingham New Street posted on X (formerly Twitter): "There will be disruption to trains between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury throughout today. We continue to deal with the derailed freight train and fix the large amount of damage caused to the railway."
Transport monitoring service Inrix reported that there is a reduced service between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street, with no Transport for Wales service between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury.
Passengers are advised to check their journey before travelling and allow extra time for delays. Rail replacement buses are in place to assist affected passengers.
