Birmingham tram services experienced major delays on Wednesday morning after a car became stuck on the tracks, blocking the route for over an hour. The incident occurred on the Midland Metro line near the city centre, causing disruption for commuters during the busy morning rush hour.
Details of the Incident
The car reportedly drove onto the tram tracks at a crossing point and became immobilized, blocking the path of oncoming trams. Services between Bull Street and Snow Hill were suspended while crews worked to remove the vehicle. West Midlands Metro confirmed the disruption at around 8:30 AM, advising passengers to seek alternative transport.
Passenger Impact
Commuters faced long delays and overcrowding on replacement bus services. Many expressed frustration on social media, with some reporting delays of up to 45 minutes. One passenger said, "I was late for work because of this. It's not the first time it's happened either."
Response and Recovery
Emergency services attended the scene, and a recovery vehicle was called to remove the car. The tracks were cleared by 9:45 AM, and normal service resumed shortly after. West Midlands Metro apologized for the inconvenience and reminded drivers to avoid tram tracks at all times.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time a vehicle has blocked Birmingham's tram lines. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, prompting calls for better signage and barriers at crossing points. A spokesperson for the transport authority said they are reviewing safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
Passengers are advised to check for updates on the West Midlands Metro website or social media channels before traveling.
