Bargain Hunt Auctioneer Charles Hanson's Unfortunate Train Toilet Ordeal
In a comical turn of events, BBC Bargain Hunt auctioneer Charles Hanson found himself in a sticky situation after becoming stuck in a train toilet while travelling from Derby to London. The 47-year-old antiques expert, who owns Hanson Auctioneers in Lichfield, was on an East Midlands Railway service at approximately 6:18 pm on Friday, April 18, when the incident unfolded.
Social Media SOS Goes Viral
Hanson took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to appeal for help after failing to operate the door release mechanism in the train's lavatory. In a video clip that quickly amassed over 500,000 views, he explained his predicament with a mix of humour and desperation.
He stated, "Tonight. I'm on the delayed 17:46 train to London, but I'm locked in the loo. If anyone's on the train, the 17:54, I'll be grateful for some reason. When I press these buttons, nothing's happening. Anyway, hopefully I'll be okay. Have a lovely evening, wherever you are. I'm on a train just approaching Leicester, heading south. Have a great weekend and hopefully I'll be out."
Adding to the plea, he tapped on the door and called out, "Hello. If you're on your way to the loo, can you have the door? Could be a long journey..." In the caption of his post, he wrote, "IM STUCK IN THE LOO if anyone is on the Derby train to London.. can you let me out the toilet? the door won’t open & I’m stuck."
Online Reactions and Rescue
The post triggered a wave of amusement among social media users, with hundreds of replies poking fun at the situation. One user remarked, "Social media is wild. He's stuck in a London train and me in Nigeria might be aware before the driver of that same train.. wow, the world is really in our hands right now," to which Hanson responded, "This couldn't be more true."
Another joked, "The buttons have a smell sensor. Once the stench of your number 2 has gone, the doors will open. It's a protection mechanism for other passengers." A third quipped, "What an interesting idea to post it asking for help. I'd imagine he'll be there for days..."
Fortunately, the transport operator East Midlands Railway saw the viral post and intervened to free Hanson from the toilet. The company has been contacted for further comment on the incident.
Charles Hanson, also known for his appearances on shows like Secrets of the Auction House, continues to be a popular figure in the antiques world, with this episode adding a light-hearted twist to his public persona.
