The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Mexico following an incident at the Teotihuacán pyramids. The FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to several parts of the country, including the city of Tijuana.
Key Changes to Travel Advice
On Thursday, 23 April, the FCDO announced the removal of information related to an incident at the Teotihuacán pyramids in Estado de México. Travelers are reminded that insurance policies may be invalidated if they travel against official advice.
Restricted Areas in Mexico
The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the following regions:
- Tijuana – except airside transit, the Cross Border Xpress bridge, and federal toll road 1D/Vía Rápida to the border.
- Tecate – including roads between Tijuana and Tecate.
- Chihuahua state – except the city of Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez border crossing via toll road 45, and toll road 45D between them. Exemptions include the Copper Canyon rail route and nearby towns.
- Sinaloa state – except Los Mochis, Mazatlán, road 32, toll road 15D, and the Copper Canyon rail route.
- Tamaulipas state – except the Nuevo Laredo border crossing via toll road 85D and highways 80, 81, 85 between Tampico, Ciudad Victoria, and Magueyes, plus areas south of these highways.
- Zacatecas state – and areas southwest of road 45D.
- Michoacán state – except Morelia via toll roads 15D, 126, 43; toll road 48D to the airport; Pátzcuaro via toll roads 14D and 15; boat trips on Lake Pátzcuaro; and Federal Highway 15D.
- Areas south and southwest of Lake Chapala to the Colima border.
- Northern municipalities of Bolaños, Chimaltitán, Colotlán, Hostotipaquillo, Huejúcar, Huequilla el Alto, Mezquitic, San Martin de Bolaños, Santa Maria de los Ángeles, Totatiche, and Villa Guerrero.
- Colima state – except Manzanillo via sea or air, and road 200 from the airport.
- Guerrero state – except Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa via air.
- Within 40 km of the Guatemalan border from the Pacific Coast to the Gracias a Dios crossing.
- Federal Highway 199 between Rancho Nuevo (near San Cristobal de las Casas) and the Chancalá junction (near Palenque).
