Lidl Rolls Out Self-Scanning Checkouts in Seven New UK Stores
Lidl Self-Scanning Checkouts Expand to Seven New Stores

Lidl, which operates branches in Birmingham and across the UK, is introducing a significant change to its checkouts by expanding its self-scanning tool, Lidl & Go, to seven more stores. The move aims to provide customers with greater flexibility and help them avoid queues.

New Stores Getting Lidl & Go

The seven stores that will now offer the Lidl & Go feature are located in Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guildford, and Eastleigh. This follows a successful trial in four stores last year and marks the next phase of the rollout in 2026.

How Lidl & Go Works

Customers can use the existing Lidl Plus app to scan products as they shop, track their spending and savings in real time, and complete purchases quickly at a self-checkout terminal. This system is designed to enhance the customer experience by offering a smarter and faster shopping method.

Louise Weise, Lidl GB Chief Customer Officer, said: “This trial is another step forward in our digital evolution, giving shoppers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop. As we continue to invest in Lidl Plus, our focus remains on making the shopping experience simple and rewarding. Whether a customer chooses a traditional checkout, self-service, or the autonomy of self-scanning, our priority is ensuring they have the flexibility to shop on their own terms.”

Future Plans

The next phase of the trial is intended to provide the insights needed to optimise and enhance the customer experience ahead of any further rollout. Lidl GB Chief Executive Officer Ryan McDonnell commented: “This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution. Integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop. We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences. Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”

Lidl competes with other major supermarkets including Aldi, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda.
