Over-70s Give Up Driving Licences Ahead of New Government Safety Rules
Over-70s Give Up Licences Before New Safety Rules

Hundreds of pensioners have decided to give up their driving licences and stop driving altogether, according to exclusive data. This comes ahead of a new government safety crackdown aimed at older motorists.

Renewal Requirements for Over-70s

Drivers must renew their licences once they turn 70 and then every three years after that. This is for safety reasons, so the DVLA is made aware of any medical conditions that could impact driving. However, some drivers have decided against renewing, possibly due to medical conditions, including eyesight-related issues.

Data Reveals Thousands Taken Off Roads

Data obtained by BirminghamLive under the Freedom of Information Act showed that 1,188 people did not make an application to renew their entitlement to drive upon expiry at the age of 70. There were another 611 this year up to the end of February. Some motorists may have decided it was no longer safe for them to continue driving, and they may have anticipated the DVLA refusing renewal applications in any case.

Government Plans for Mandatory Eyesight Tests

The government is preparing to introduce mandatory eyesight tests for over-70s. Currently, older people have to report any medical ailments themselves, a system coroners have said is not strong enough. It is thought that over-70s will be required to submit evidence of successful eyesight tests to the DVLA when renewing, providing greater assurance about who is safe to be behind the wheel.

Ben Welham, motoring expert at Marshall Motor Group, said: 'Eyesight deterioration usually happens gradually, so drivers might not notice small changes over time. Regular professional eye tests remain the safest way to make sure you meet the legal standard and can continue driving confidently.'
