Drivers in North East Lincolnshire could face parking bans on certain streets as part of a crackdown to help bin lorries collect waste. The proposed measures aim to address difficulties faced by food waste collection vehicles.
Double Yellow Lines Proposed
Double yellow lines may be introduced around more than a dozen junctions in Grimsby and Cleethorpes to prevent vehicles from waiting at any time. The changes, known as a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), will undergo public consultation before implementation.
Anthony Snell, the council's traffic and transport manager, told a meeting: "There are often vehicles parked or simply obstructing." He added: "It occasionally leads to bins being left or rounds being disrupted."
Additional Traffic Measures
The meeting also confirmed a new 30mph speed limit on a section of Stallingborough Road in Immingham. Proposed restrictions to parking and loading provisions in Grimsby town centre streets and Osborne Street in Cleethorpes are linked to the Market Place transformation.
Councillor Paul Batson, portfolio holder for housing, infrastructure and transport, agreed to proceed to the consultation stage.
Resident Reactions
Residents expressed mixed reactions to the proposals. One commented: "The normal bin lorries manage very well, why will the introduction of food waste bins make a difference?" Another said: "Does beg the question why the regular refuse collection vehicles have done their rounds on these streets for years without needing yellow lines, so how come the much smaller food waste bin collection vehicles find it so difficult. The council are over reaching their executive powers with this one."
A third resident noted: "The roads near me have suddenly become extremely hard to navigate due to the number of parked cars, this wasn't an issue 12 months ago, it got exponentially worse sometime around the summer school holidays last year." Another added: "So, they're going to ban people from parking outside their own house to make way for a bin lorry to come and empty yet another bin that hardly anybody even wants? Brilliant. Give yourselves a nice, slow clap."
