A freight train derailment in Wolverhampton has led to significant disruption on the Wolverhampton-Shrewsbury railway line, with services expected to be affected through Thursday.
West Midlands Railway has issued a warning that delays and cancellations will continue after an update from Network Rail. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when a low-speed freight train derailed in the Oxley area, blocking all lines and damaging overhead electric wires.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Railway stated: "Following an update from Network Rail, we expect disruption to continue into Thursday. Delays and cancellations are expected throughout the day between Wolverhampton and Bilbrook."
Network Rail confirmed that no injuries were reported and no other trains were involved in the incident. A spokesperson said: "A low-speed freight train derailment happened in Oxley, Wolverhampton, at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, May 5. One wagon derailed, and there were no injuries or other trains involved."
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is currently on site conducting initial checks. Once these are complete, engineers will assess the damage and determine the work required to reopen the railway as soon as possible.
Passengers are advised to check their journey planners before travelling as delays and cancellations are expected throughout Thursday, May 7, on services between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton.
