Sunken Manhole Causes Major Tram Disruption in Wolverhampton
Tram services in Wolverhampton have been severely disrupted on Tuesday morning, April 7, 2026, due to a sunken manhole on a key road. West Midlands Metro has confirmed that all tram operations between Priestfield and Wolverhampton stations are currently halted.
Alternative Transport Options Available for Passengers
To mitigate the inconvenience for commuters, ticket acceptance has been arranged on select alternative transport services. Passengers holding valid tram tickets or passes can use National Express West Midlands bus service 79 for travel between Wolverhampton and Priestfield.
Additionally, West Midlands Railway trains between Wolverhampton and Birmingham are also accepting these tickets. This arrangement aims to provide seamless travel options while repairs are underway.
Official Statement and Repair Details
A spokesperson for West Midlands Metro posted on social media platform X to inform the public: "Due to a sunken manhole on the Bilston Road (A41) trams are operating between Priestfield and Edgbaston Village. There is no service in operation between Priestfield and Wolverhampton."
The spokesperson further explained that the manhole is owned by Severn Trent Water, who will be responsible for conducting the necessary repairs. When questioned about a potential restoration time, the representative stated, "I can't give a time on when it will be fixed. As soon as we can travel back to Wolverhampton we will let all of our passengers know."
Road Traffic Also Affected by the Incident
The disruption extends beyond public transport, impacting motorists as well. Bilston Road is partially blocked in both directions from A4126 Ettingshall Road to A4150 Ring Road St Davids, commonly known as Bilston Road Island.
This closure is likely to cause significant traffic delays in the area, adding to the travel challenges faced by residents and commuters. Authorities have advised drivers to seek alternative routes if possible.
Ongoing Situation and Public Communication
West Midlands Metro has apologized for any inconvenience caused by this unexpected service interruption. The company is actively monitoring the situation and promises to provide updates as soon as more information becomes available regarding the repair timeline.
BirminghamLive has reached out to Severn Trent Water for additional comments on the repair process and expected duration of the road closure. Commuters are encouraged to check for real-time updates through official transport channels before planning their journeys.
