TG Jones Post Office Closures Threaten 60 Locations Amid Restructuring
TG Jones Post Office Closures: 60 at Risk

TG Jones, the operator of 180 post offices across the UK, is facing a restructuring plan by its parent company Modella that could lead to the closure of up to 60 locations. The move has raised concerns about the emergence of so-called 'postal deserts' in communities that rely on these services.

Restructuring Plan Details

Modella has informed creditors of its intention to amend Post Office contracts, allowing outlets that lose their leases to be shut down with just 56 days' notice. This is a significant reduction from the current six-month notice period. The Guardian reports that the plan aims to streamline operations and protect the core of the store estate.

Union and Community Reaction

Mole Meade, a member of the CWU executive council, expressed strong opposition to the proposals. 'We have been warning governments for nearly 35 years that outsourcing social services like the Post Office to companies will prioritise shareholders over communities,' Meade said. 'The result will be the closure of community and crown post offices, leaving many areas without essential services.'

Modella defended the restructuring, stating: 'The plan is designed to create a stronger, more sustainable business that can continue to serve customers for years to come. We are grateful for the support from stakeholders, including the Post Office and Toys R Us.'

Post Office Response

A Post Office spokesperson acknowledged the challenging retail environment: 'It's regrettable that a small number of branches inside TG Jones stores will close in the coming months. We are working hard to find nearby locations to continue offering services. Post offices drive significant footfall to the high street, and we will continue to support the many branches not impacted by this announcement.'

The restructuring plan comes amid broader pressures on high street retailers, with many struggling to adapt to changing consumer habits. The potential closures have sparked fears that vulnerable communities could lose access to postal services, exacerbating existing inequalities.
