West Midlands Railway Tops Passenger Satisfaction Survey
Passenger satisfaction levels with train services operating across the West Midlands have been officially revealed in new survey data. The figures, collected and published by the independent watchdog Transport Focus, are set to be presented to the West Midlands Combined Authority's Transport Delivery Overview and Scrutiny Committee. This comprehensive report details what rail users think about punctuality, value for money, and overall service quality provided by various train companies in the region.
Survey Methodology and Key Findings
The data was gathered through surveys conducted in December 2025, offering a recent snapshot of passenger experiences. Transport Focus stated on its website that it uses such evidence to advocate for the 'best deal for passengers and road users.' Among the operators, West Midlands Railway scored the highest for overall satisfaction, achieving an impressive 90% approval rate from respondents. However, it fared less well in the 'value for money' category, securing only 61%, though it did achieve a strong 84% score for punctuality.
Comparative Performance of Train Operators
Other operators also showed varied results in the survey. Transport for Wales placed second in overall satisfaction with 88%, while scoring 70% for value for money and 82% for punctuality. Avanti achieved 87% for overall satisfaction, alongside 55% for value for money and 82% for punctuality. Chiltern Railways reported an overall satisfaction rate of 85%, with value for money at 55% and punctuality at 86%. London Northwestern Railway achieved the second highest punctuality score at 85%, with overall satisfaction at 83%, but value for money only reached 54%. Cross Country Trains recorded an 82% score for both overall satisfaction and punctuality, with value for money at 56%.
Additional Measures: Safety and Cleanliness
The survey also asked passengers to rate other critical aspects of their travel experience. Regarding personal safety on trains, Avanti topped the list with a score of 92%, followed closely by Transport for Wales at 91%. Chiltern and Cross Country both achieved 88%, while London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway scored 85%. In terms of train cleanliness, Avanti again led with 88%, with West Midlands Railway second at 84%. Transport for Wales received 81%, London Northwestern 79%, Chiltern 77%, and Cross Country 73%.
The full report will be discussed when the committee convenes on Monday, March 9, providing an opportunity for transport officials to review these insights and potentially address areas of concern, particularly around value for money perceptions among passengers.
