The planned reopening of the railway line between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury on May 7 has been postponed following a freight train derailment. The incident occurred near Oxley on the evening of May 5, causing significant damage to the track and overhead power lines.
Details of the Derailment
Network Rail confirmed that a single wagon of a freight train derailed at low speed around 8:30 pm. The wagon remained upright, and no injuries were reported. No other trains were involved in the incident.
Impact on Services
The derailment has led to the suspension of all train services between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. A West Midlands Railway spokesperson stated that following a conference, it was decided the line would not reopen as initially expected. Replacement bus services are now in operation to assist passengers.
West Midlands Railway is running a shuttle service between Shrewsbury and Telford, while Transport for Wales (TfW) has altered its routes. TfW services to and from Birmingham Airport are currently starting and ending at Shrewsbury, with buses connecting Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton.
The line between Wolverhampton and Stafford remains open, though passengers may experience some changes to services.
