A45 Coventry Road Closure: Major Birmingham Airport Link Shut This Weekend
A45 Coventry Road near Birmingham Airport to close this weekend

Drivers and bus passengers in Birmingham are being warned of significant disruption this weekend as a major route linking the city centre to the airport will be shut for essential works.

Road Closure Details and Timings

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has confirmed that the A45 Coventry Road will be closed in Sheldon. The closure affects the carriageway heading towards Birmingham city centre, specifically the section between the junctions of Lyndon Road and Wagon Lane.

The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 11pm on Friday, 9 January 2026. It will remain in force throughout the weekend, finally reopening at 5pm on Sunday, 11 January 2026.

Planned Diversions and Travel Advice

Signed diversion routes will be operational for the duration of the closure. TfWM is actively advising motorists to avoid the area entirely if possible. For those needing to travel, the recommended alternative routes are via Hob's Moat Road and Damson Parkway.

The closure will also impact local bus services. The bus stop located on Lyndon Road will be temporarily suspended. The following services towards Birmingham city centre will follow a short diversion:

  • Bus 60
  • Bus 877
  • Bus X1
  • Bus X2

Passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check for real-time updates from their bus operator.

Reason for the Weekend Shutdown

The closure is necessary to allow contractors to continue a phased programme of improvements to bus infrastructure and shelters along the A45 corridor. This work is part of ongoing investments to enhance public transport facilities in the region.

The strategic location of the road, serving as a key link between Birmingham city centre and Birmingham Airport, means the closure is likely to cause notable congestion on alternative routes. Authorities urge all travellers to plan ahead.
