Motorists in Staffordshire are facing significant disruption this evening after a major route was suddenly closed for urgent repair works.

The northbound carriageway of the A5 in Tamworth has been closed to all traffic. The shutdown was implemented on Monday, January 12, and authorities have warned it is likely to remain in force for most of the evening.
The closure affects the section between the A453 and the M6 Toll/A38 interchange. The decision was taken due to identified infrastructure defects that require immediate attention.
Resurfacing Works Underway
According to an official alert issued by Nilo at approximately 5pm today, resurfacing works are now taking place at the site. The alert stated: "WMROC log confirms that the A5 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between the A51 and the A453 due to infrastructure defects."
It further added: "The closure is likely to remain in place for several hours for resurfacing works to take place." This indicates drivers should seek alternative routes for the remainder of the day.
Diversions and Travel Advice
Highways teams have been working to establish a signed diversion route to guide affected traffic around the closure. Drivers are strongly advised to:
- Allow extra time for journeys in the Tamworth area.
