Motorists across Birmingham are receiving a stark warning that mounting pavements to park could be severely damaging their vehicles, potentially leading to repair bills exceeding £300. Cracked alloy wheels and deteriorated suspension systems are becoming increasingly common repair requests, with typical costs ranging between £300 and £500 per incident. Neil Fellows, Director at Stourbridge Automotive, commented on the growing problem, stating that parking challenges across the UK are forcing many drivers to mount kerbs despite the potential consequences.
"Over time, this practice can cause serious damage to vehicles," Fellows explained. "We are seeing more cases entering our workshop that could have been easily avoided with different parking choices. Repeatedly driving onto kerbs places significant strain on a vehicle's components, leading to damaged tyre sidewalls, cracked and weakened alloy wheels, and accelerated wear on suspension systems. This wear can ultimately cause misalignment issues that negatively affect vehicle handling and safety."
Double Financial Impact for Motorists
Martyn Miller, Regional Manager at GSF Car Parts, highlighted the potential for Birmingham drivers to face dual financial penalties. "With councils preparing to implement stricter parking enforcement measures, motorists in Birmingham could soon experience a double financial impact," Miller warned. "First, they might receive fines for illegal parking, and second, they'll need to pay for expensive vehicle repairs. What many consider an everyday parking habit could ultimately cost them hundreds of pounds in combined penalties and repair bills."
