Midlands Drivers Face £70 Fines in New Red Route Crackdown on A594
£70 Fines for Midlands Drivers on New Red Routes

Midlands drivers will face £70 fines under new red route restrictions being introduced by Leicester City Council on a key section of the A594. The council has announced plans to implement 'red route' clearway rules on Burleys Way, St Matthews Way, and St George's Way, which form part of the Leicester Inner Ring Road. The new measures are set to take effect in early July, with fixed penalty notices of £70 issued to any motorist who stops illegally on the route. The fine is reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

Purpose of the Red Route

The council stated that the primary aim is to keep traffic flowing smoothly along this busy arterial road. Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for transport and environment, explained: 'This extension to two existing red routes is being introduced to tackle the problem of cars and lorries stopping illegally along this busy road. It will help cut congestion, keep traffic moving more efficiently and improve journey times for all road users on this important route in and out of the city.' The new red route will connect existing red routes on London Road and the A6 St Margaret's Way, creating a continuous no-stopping zone along a significant portion of the city's highway network.

Enforcement and Implementation

Unlike traditional red routes marked with red lines on the road surface, this new restriction will be indicated by red signs only, in accordance with red route clearway rules. The council has confirmed there are no current plans to install fixed enforcement cameras on the new red route. Instead, enforcement will be carried out by the city council's CCTV-equipped enforcement car, which can patrol the area and issue penalties to violators. Letters have been delivered to nearby homes and businesses to notify them of the forthcoming changes and the potential for noise during the implementation work.

Impact on Drivers

Drivers using the A594 through Leicester should be aware that stopping on this stretch of road will result in a £70 fine, with the discounted rate of £35 if paid promptly. The council hopes that the clearway order will reduce delays caused by illegally parked vehicles and improve journey reliability for commuters, businesses, and other road users. The measure is part of broader efforts to manage traffic flow in the city and enhance the efficiency of the transport network.
