Flooding in the central terminal area of Heathrow Airport has led to ongoing road closures restricting access to Terminals 2 and 3, prompting a travel warning for passengers on Saturday, August 15. The airport has advised travellers to allow extra time and use rail services where possible.
Road closures and travel advice
In a statement on its website, Heathrow said: "Flooding in the central terminal area has resulted in on-going road closures restricting access to Terminals 2 and 3." Passengers travelling to or from either terminal today are advised not to travel by road. The airport strongly recommends using Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line, and Piccadilly Line rail services instead.
For those who must travel by car, the airport advises using Park and Ride facilities, heading to Terminals 4 or 5 and taking free rail services from there, or changing at local rail stations. The statement adds: "Please allow extra time for your journeys. Our teams are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, we apologise for any disruption caused."
Passenger concerns and airport responses
The airport also posted the statement on its X page, which drew responses from concerned travellers. One passenger wrote: "We have paid £300 for airport car parking for Terminal 3. What do we do? Do we have to meet and greet at T4 or 5?? When will this be resolved?"
An official response read: "We understand your concern. For now we recommend heading to T5 M&G and explaining to staff that your booking has been affected by the flooding. Please be assured our teams are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, so please watch this space for further updates. Have a safe journey!"
Another traveller said: "I am collecting my daughter from Terminal 3 shortly, she has special needs. She has travelled via a wheelchair. Please can you advise?" The airport replied: "You would not be able to park at Terminal 3 currently as there is no access by road, you would need to park at Terminal 4 or 5 and transfer to Terminal 3. We do have assistance teams in the terminal who would be able to advise on the best way of returning to your vehicle with a wheelchair passenger."
Impact on travellers
The flooding has caused significant disruption for passengers booked to use Terminals 2 and 3, with road access blocked and alternative arrangements required. The airport has not provided a timeline for when the closures will be lifted, but teams are working to resolve the issue. Passengers are advised to check for updates and plan their journeys accordingly, using rail services or alternative terminals where necessary.
