Barney Walsh Receives Six-Month Driving Ban for Motorway Speeding Offence
Barney Walsh, the 28-year-old television presenter and actor known for co-hosting BBC Gladiators with his father Bradley Walsh, has been handed a six-month driving disqualification after being caught speeding on a motorway. The incident occurred on the M4 in south Gloucestershire, where Walsh exceeded a temporary 50mph speed limit while driving his black Mercedes-Benz SUV.
Details of the Speeding Incident and Court Proceedings
Walsh was driving at 58mph in a 50mph zone on the M4 westbound at junction 19 on October 27 last year, during a period when a temporary maximum speed restriction was in place. The case was heard at Romford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, April 8, where Walsh did not attend due to work commitments that required him to be out of England, according to his lawyer Gwyn Lewis.
Lewis represented Walsh in court and informed magistrates that his client already had nine penalty points on his licence, making a driving ban inevitable under UK law. Walsh had previously pleaded guilty to one count of exceeding the temporary motorway speed limit.
Legal Consequences and Financial Penalties
Magistrates' bench chairwoman Janis Sanders imposed the six-month driving ban and ordered Walsh to pay several financial penalties:
- A fixed penalty notice of £72
- A victim surcharge of £28
- Prosecution costs of £85
Lewis confirmed that Walsh is in a position to pay the fixed penalty notice within the required 28-day period. The lawyer stated he was not instructed to resist the disqualification and that Walsh had been informed he must not drive from the night before the hearing.
Background on Penalty Points System
In the UK, minor speeding offences typically result in three penalty points being added to a driver's licence. Motorists who accumulate 12 or more penalty points within a three-year period generally face an automatic driving ban of at least six months. Walsh's existing nine points, combined with this latest offence, pushed him over this threshold.
Beyond his role on Gladiators, Walsh has appeared in several television programmes including Death in Paradise and Casualty. He resides in Epping, Essex, and was driving a 2023 model Mercedes-Benz SUV at the time of the offence.
