Why Birmingham New Street Works Continue and When They Will End
Birmingham New Street Works: Why They Continue and End Date

If you have walked along New Street from Victoria Square towards the Bullring recently, you will have noticed that construction work is still ongoing to transform the busy thoroughfare. The project began on January 5, when paving was removed and areas fenced off as contractors started updating the public realm.

In essence, 'public realm' refers to shared spaces—common areas where people spend their time. The upgrade includes a new footpath, improved lighting, benches, and bicycle parking. Drainage and accessibility are also set to improve, with the entire schedule of works expected to take around two years to complete.

However, this does not mean New Street will be disrupted for the full two years. The upper section is just one phase; Bennetts Hill, Ethel Street, Lower Temple Street, Eden Place, and Chamberlain Passage will also benefit from enhancements.

Why the Delays?

Contractor CPC Civils is responsible for the work. Initially, the upper part of New Street was due to be finished by April 16. But Birmingham City Council told BirminghamLive that the removal of large areas of underground concrete caused delays for this phase. Despite this, the overall completion date remains unchanged.

The council added that CPC Civils has been working closely with businesses on New Street to share updates and gather feedback. Temporary bridges have been installed across excavated areas to ensure shops remain accessible.

Updated Timeline

If all goes to plan, works on Temple Street should be completed by May 22, though this date is subject to change. Similarly, the steps beside the Floozie (the fountain statue) are expected to be finished by May 29.

Further down New Street, between the junction of Ethel Street and the bottom of Bennetts Hill, completion is anticipated by July 9. Meanwhile, the area outside Hotel Chocolat should be ready around June 4.

We will provide a full list of all planned works, including expected start and end dates, in a separate article. Birmingham—it will be lovely when it's done!
