Birmingham's Cheapest Petrol Stations Ranked Amid Fuel Price Surge
Costco and Asda have emerged as among the most affordable places to refuel in Birmingham, according to recent data, as motorists across the UK face escalating fuel costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Global Oil Prices Trigger Fuel Cost Increases
Oil prices have skyrocketed in response to Iran's stranglehold on tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global energy supplies. This surge has directly impacted wholesale fuel costs, leading to significant price hikes at petrol stations nationwide.
The RAC reported that the average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts reached 184.2p on Wednesday, marking a 29% increase since the conflict began on February 28. Meanwhile, average petrol prices have climbed to 153.7p per litre, representing a 16% rise over the same period.

Political Calls for Fuel Duty Intervention
Lord Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland and cost-of-living tsar for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has urged the government to consider extending or enlarging the fuel duty cut set to expire in September. He highlighted that Australia has implemented a 14p per litre reduction in fuel tax, compared to the UK's 5p cut.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in her November 2025 budget that the 5p-per-litre fuel duty reduction, initially introduced by the Conservative government in March 2022, would be extended only until the end of August. Rates are then planned to gradually return to March 2022 levels over the following five years.
Prime Minister Sir Keir has promised to keep the scheduled fuel duty rise from September under review in light of the ongoing conflict in Iran. The government has also intensified efforts to assist drivers in locating the cheapest fuel through price comparison websites.
Opposition Proposals and Industry Concerns
Opposition parties have advocated for more immediate action to alleviate fuel costs. The Conservatives have proposed removing VAT on energy bills for the next three years, Reform UK has pledged to reduce VAT on fuel and eliminate green levies on energy bills, and the Liberal Democrats have suggested introducing a 10p cut in fuel duty.
The Road Haulage Association has warned that rising fuel prices pose a major challenge for HGV, coach, and van operators, who often operate on tight margins. Managing director Richard Smith emphasized that these increased costs will ultimately be passed on to households, calling for the scrapping of the fuel duty hike and the implementation of a targeted rebate for essential users.
A Treasury spokesperson stated, "We have the right economic plan for a more volatile world, taking a responsible approach to supporting working people in the national interest. Fuel duty is frozen until September and we're enabling targeted support for those facing higher heating oil costs."
As political pressure mounts regarding energy security, reports indicate that Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to approve the Jackdaw gasfield off the coast of Scotland, although he remains opposed to the Rosebank field.
