A car caught fire in a council-owned car park off High Street in Kings Heath, leading to significant traffic delays and a warning to nearby residents. West Midlands Fire Service was called to the scene shortly before 8pm on Monday, June 1, after reports of smoke emanating from the area.
The source of the smoke was identified as an electric car that had caught fire while plugged into a charging point. The vehicle was parked in a Birmingham City Council car park at the time of the incident.
Emergency Response
West Midlands Fire Service dispatched three fire engines to the location. In a post on X, the service stated: 'We have three crews in attendance at a fire on High Street, Kings Heath. As a precaution, if you live or work nearby, please keep doors and windows closed. Avoid the area, where possible.'
A spokesperson for the fire brigade provided further details: 'We were called at 7.47pm on Monday. An electric car at a charging point was causing a lot of smoke in the area in the car park. Two crews were initially sent, and we were asked for another fire engine. There are no casualties, and we have requested police to assist with traffic and the council for the charging point as it is a council car park.'

The fire caused heavy traffic on High Street and surrounding roads as emergency services worked to extinguish the blaze and manage the scene.
