Derby City Council Announces Expansion of Traffic Enforcement Measures
Drivers in Derby are set to face stricter enforcement as the local council widens its traffic crackdown to three new key locations. This move follows an extensive 18-month consultation period and aims to enhance road safety across the city.
New Enforcement Sites Identified
The council has confirmed that the Moving Traffic Enforcement scheme will be extended to Iron Gate, Osmaston Road at the junction with Ascot Drive, and Manor Road near Constable Lane. These areas have been selected based on feedback and the need to address traffic offences effectively.
Since its introduction in 2022, the scheme has empowered the council to issue penalties for various contraventions, including driving in pedestrian zones, violating banned turns, ignoring no-entry and one-way signs, stopping within yellow box markings, and entering protected zones near schools.
Council Highlights Success and Safety Goals
Councillor Carmel Swan emphasized the importance of the expansion, stating, "While most drivers are careful and considerate, those that commit moving traffic offences put pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users in danger." She added that the effectiveness of existing measures has been proven, with high compliance levels at current sites making further camera enforcement less necessary.
The council's statement noted, "Due to the level of compliance achieved at the sites above, camera enforcement is no longer a proportionate approach as the level of compliance with the restriction is high." This success has paved the way for the new expansions.
Financial Reinvestment and Broader Impact
Funds generated from penalty charges are reinvested into the scheme, ensuring continuous improvements. The council aims to make travel safer, particularly for those opting for active travel options like walking and cycling.
Previously, enforcement has been operational at locations such as St Alkmund's Way, Curzon Street, and Spondon's Chapel Street. The expansion to the new sites is expected to further reduce traffic violations and promote a safer urban environment.
This initiative reflects Derby City Council's ongoing commitment to road safety and community well-being, with plans to monitor outcomes and adjust strategies as needed.
