Drivers Face £70 Fines in Red Route Crackdown from May 5

Drivers in Derbyshire face £70 fines from May 5 as the county council launches a crackdown on poor parking with new red routes. The measures target inconsiderate parking in the Castleton and Mam Tor areas, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.

Red Route Locations and Restrictions

The red routes will cover Old Mam Tor Road, Rushup Edge Road, Winnats Pass, and other key roads. All motorists, including licensed taxis and Blue Badge holders, must adhere to the restrictions or face penalties. Double red lines prohibit stopping or parking on roads, verges, or pavements.

New Parking Arrangements in Castleton

Additional changes include new street parking arrangements within Castleton, with double yellow lines on several streets and pay-by-phone parking bays. Blue Badge bays will operate between 9am and 5pm, with a maximum stay of 3 hours. Parking bays on Old Mam Tor Road will become pay-by-phone only, with new solar-powered pay and display machines installed in July. The lining and signing of these new parking arrangements began on April 27.

Council's Rationale

Charlotte Hill, the council's cabinet member for highways and transport, stated: "With these measures we have listened carefully and tried to balance the needs of local people, business and visitors to this beautiful part of our county." She emphasized safety as a key factor, particularly when roads become blocked. "It's essential residents can rely on emergency and other services to reach them no matter the time of day, which can be difficult when people have double-parked or blocked driveways," she said. Hill added: "At the same time, we want to encourage sustainable visitor numbers, reduce congestion and deliver the best outcome to what is one of the most highly visited and outstanding areas in Derbyshire."
