Drivers are being warned that a seemingly minor maintenance issue could lead to a hefty £2,500 fine and penalty points on their licence, even during the summer months. Under UK road traffic laws, windscreen wipers and washers must be properly adjusted and maintained in efficient working order at all times.
Legal Requirements for Windscreen Wipers
According to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, windscreen wipers and washers are mandatory equipment and must be kept in good working condition. Failure to comply can result in the vehicle being deemed as 'used in a dangerous condition,' which carries a maximum fine of £2,500 and three penalty points.
The RAC advises motorists to regularly check their wiper blades and replace them if they are worn or damaged. 'On older vehicles, upgrading to aero wipers can significantly improve performance, especially at high speeds,' a spokesperson said.
Summer Weather Risks
While May and June are often associated with warmer weather, the Met Office warns that low pressure systems could still bring showers and longer spells of rain. 'Showers or longer spells of rain are likely at times, these heavy in places, with the wettest conditions probably towards the northwest,' the Met Office forecast states.
Drivers should not assume that summer means no rain. The Met Office adds that 'low pressure systems are likely to still be close by to the UK at the start of this period.' This means that faulty wipers could be a safety hazard even in the warmer months.
How to Avoid a Fine
To stay safe and avoid penalties, drivers should:
- Check wiper blades regularly for signs of wear, such as streaking or chattering.
- Replace blades at least once a year or as needed.
- Ensure the washer fluid reservoir is topped up with a suitable cleaning solution.
- Test the washer jets to confirm they are aimed correctly and not blocked.
Ignoring these simple checks could prove costly. With the potential for sudden summer downpours, having fully functional wipers is essential for road safety.
