Drivers Receive Critical Two-Day Fuel Warning Before Easter Weekend

Motorists across the UK are being issued an urgent two-day warning to fill their tanks before 10am on Thursday, April 2, as the Easter weekend is anticipated to bring exceptionally heavy traffic. This period is projected to see the highest number of road users for the holiday in four years, creating significant congestion on major routes.

Record-Breaking Leisure Journeys Forecast

The RAC estimates that nearly 21 million leisure journeys are planned over the Easter break, marking a continued rise in travel for the second consecutive year. Sean Kimberlin, team leader for RAC mobile servicing and repairs, emphasized the determination of drivers to make the most of the holiday despite recent fuel price increases.

"Fuel prices may have risen sharply in recent weeks, but our research with drivers shows they are still determined to make the most of the Easter break," Kimberlin stated. "For many, Easter is the first real chance to get away since Christmas."

Fuel Price Surge and Travel Plans

Recent spikes in fuel costs, with diesel now around £19 more per tank and petrol about £8 more compared to last year, have not deterred the majority of travelers. Only a small number of people have altered their plans due to these financial pressures.

Kimberlin advised drivers to utilize tools like the myRAC app to locate the cheapest forecourts nearby, helping to mitigate the impact of higher prices. "We're urging drivers to use the myRAC app to find the cheapest forecourts near them," he added.

Expected Traffic Hotspots and Delays

Traffic is predicted to build from Thursday as schools close for the break, with particular congestion expected on key motorways such as the M5 towards Devon and Cornwall and the M25. The worst delays are anticipated to start from around 10am, making an early departure the best strategy to avoid lengthy queues.

"The worst delays are expected from around 10am, so getting on the road early is still the best way to avoid the queues," Kimberlin noted.

Factors Behind Rising Fuel Prices

The increase in fuel prices is attributed to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where hundreds of vessels have been blocked. These geopolitical events have contributed to the higher costs at the pump, adding an extra layer of consideration for travelers this Easter.

As the getaway approaches, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, refuel early, and stay informed to ensure a smoother and more cost-effective journey during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
