Drivers throughout the United Kingdom are receiving urgent advice to fill up their tanks this week as petrol and diesel prices experience accelerated reductions across the nation. According to RAC head of policy Simon Williams, pump prices decreased slightly over the weekend, signaling the beginning of a more substantial downward trend.
Substantial Price Reductions Reported
Simon Williams provided specific details about the recent price movements, stating: "Petrol has now reduced by more than half a penny (0.65p) since it peaked last Wednesday, April 15th, while diesel has dropped by a full penny (1.06p)." He further explained that the RAC's comprehensive analysis of wholesale market data indicates these price reductions should accelerate throughout the current week as more retailers purchase new fuel supplies at lower wholesale costs.
Understanding Fuel Price Fluctuations
Gordon Wallis of Interfuels offered detailed explanations about the factors influencing daily fuel price changes at service stations. "Fuel prices at forecourts can change multiple times throughout a single day," Wallis clarified. "These fluctuations are primarily driven by wholesale market movements, local competitive pressures, and patterns in consumer demand."
Wallis elaborated on the typical daily pricing patterns, noting: "By late morning, many retailers have already adjusted their prices to reflect overnight changes in wholesale costs. This means drivers who refuel around midday are frequently paying a premium compared to earlier or later times."
Optimal Refuelling Times Revealed
The Interfuels expert identified specific time periods when refuelling proves most economical. "Late morning and early afternoon typically represent busy periods at service stations, with people stopping during errands, commutes, or lunch breaks," Wallis explained. "When consumer demand remains steady, there is significantly less pressure on retailers to maintain lower prices."
Wallis highlighted additional factors affecting midday pricing: "Many service stations receive fuel deliveries around the middle of the day. Those supplies are priced according to current market rates, which can contribute to higher pump prices during that specific window."
Conversely, Wallis suggested: "Filling up before 9am can sometimes mean benefiting from the previous day's pricing structure. Retailers do not always update their price boards immediately, creating a brief window where prices remain slightly lower than later adjustments."
Significant Annual Savings Possible
The financial implications of strategic refuelling can be substantial according to industry calculations. "For someone filling up regularly, choosing the right time of day could save over £100 annually," Wallis emphasized. "While this doesn't represent a dramatic difference on any single visit, the cumulative effect over twelve months becomes genuinely meaningful for household budgets."

Beyond financial considerations, Wallis identified several other benefits to strategic refuelling. "Fuel is stored underground, but cooler morning conditions can result in slightly denser fuel," he detailed. "This means motorists may obtain marginally more energy per litre compared to warmer periods later in the day."
Wallis concluded with practical advice: "Midday is frequently one of the busiest times at service stations nationwide. Refuelling either earlier or later can mean encountering shorter queues and experiencing a smoother, more efficient visit overall."
