M6 and M42 Delays: West Midlands Traffic Chaos Amid Heatwave

Motorists across the West Midlands are experiencing significant disruption on the M6 and M42 motorways today, with roadworks, heavy traffic, and an obstruction causing long delays amid a continuing heatwave.

M42 Closed in Both Directions Near Solihull

The M42 is shut in both directions around Junction 6 in Solihull due to weekend roadworks. Traffic monitoring service Inrix confirmed the closure extends from Junction 7A (M6 interchange) to Junction 6 (A45 Coventry Road) southbound, and from Junction 5A (A4545 Birmingham Airport) to Junction 7A northbound. The closure is expected to remain in place until the early hours of Monday morning.

Live traffic data from Google shows congestion building at either end of the motorway closures, with drivers advised to seek alternative routes.

M6 Stop-Start Traffic and Obstruction

On the M6, southbound traffic is experiencing stop-start conditions from Junction 10A (M54) down to Junction 8 (M5). Travel time on this stretch is around 40 minutes, according to Inrix.

Meanwhile, the northbound carriageway is partially blocked before Junction 4 (Coleshill) due to an obstruction on the road. Inrix reported: "M6 Northbound partially blocked, slow traffic due to obstruction on the road before J4 M42 J7 (Coleshill)."

Heatwave Adds to Travel Woes

The delays come as a heatwave continues to grip England, with high temperatures potentially exacerbating driving conditions. Motorists are urged to carry water and plan extra journey time.

Inrix added: "Stop-start traffic on M6 Southbound before J8 M5 coming from the M54. Travel time is 40 minutes."
