A man in his 20s has died and a woman has been seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash in Birmingham city centre in the early hours of Monday, July 13. West Midlands Police are appealing for dashcam footage as investigations continue.
Crash Details and Emergency Response
Police were called to the junction of Great Charles Street Queensway and St Chad's Queensway at approximately 2:35am following reports of a car colliding with railings. The driver, the sole male occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics' efforts. A female passenger was rushed to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
The carriageway was closed in both directions for several hours, reopening around 9am after scene examinations and initial enquiries. West Midlands Police stated they do not believe any other vehicles were involved at this stage.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
West Midlands Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the probe. A police spokesperson said: "We are investigating after a man died when a car hit railings on Birmingham’s Great Charles Street Queensway earlier today (Monday). Officers were called just after 2.35am to the scene, at the junction of Great Charles Street Queensway and St Chad’s Queensway. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medics the driver, who was in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene."
The spokesperson added: "A woman, who was the sole passenger, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital for injuries which are potentially life-threatening. Investigators remained at the scene for a number of hours with the carriageway closed off in both directions until around 9am for examinations of the scene and initial enquiries to be carried out. Investigations to establish exactly what happened are ongoing, but at this stage, we do not believe any other vehicles were involved."
