Oxfordshire County Council has announced plans to install new speed and red-light cameras at the A40 Barton Park junction, targeting motorists who exceed the 50mph limit. The initiative aims to improve road safety for residents and visitors in the area.
Details of the New Cameras
The cameras will be placed at the A40 Barton Park junction, a major A-road in Oxfordshire. They are designed to enforce the 50mph speed limit and red-light compliance. The council is working in partnership with Thames Valley Police to implement this deterrent.
Official Statements
Councillor Gareth Epps, the council's Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "This will be extremely welcome news to everyone who lives in or visits this area and needs to cross this road. We are delighted at this example of working in partnership with our colleagues at Thames Valley Police to put in a deterrent, which will make this road safer."
Chief Inspector Jade Hewitt, from Thames Valley Police's Roads Policing Unit, added: "Road safety remains a priority for Thames Valley Police, and we welcome the installation of these safety cameras at the Barton Park junction. We are aware of concerns regarding speeding and red-light offences at this location, and the evidence gathered has demonstrated the need for further enforcement measures."
Additional Enforcement Measures
Thames Valley Police has also launched a new Safety Camera Motorcyclist team as part of a drive to make roads safer and crack down on dangerous driving. Officers in this division will be equipped with handheld camera equipment featuring laser and video speed detection technology to catch rule-breaking motorists.
The Safety Camera Motorcyclist team launch follows the rollout of the National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to combat the 'fatal five' offences responsible for serious crashes.
Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber said: "The creation of the Safety Camera Motorcyclist team demonstrates Thames Valley Police's clear commitment to improving road safety and reducing the number of serious collisions and fatalities on our roads. The team will be able to reach areas where traditional safety camera vans can't, boosting enforcement capability and the force's ability to crack down on dangerous and illegal behaviours on our roads, including the fatal five."
