Storm Claudia: Millions of UK Drivers Told to 'Avoid Completely'
Storm Claudia: 'Avoid Completely' Warning for Drivers

Millions of motorists across the UK have been issued an urgent 'avoid completely' warning as the country braces for the impact of Storm Claudia, which is expected to dump a month's worth of rainfall in just 24 hours.

Critical Safety Advice from the AA

The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert that will come into force at 12 noon on Friday, November 14. Shaun Jones, an AA expert patrol, has emphasised that safety must be the top priority for all drivers. His key advice is to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid flooded roads completely.

"Conditions may change quickly, so stay updated and make sure you’re prepared before you travel," Jones warned. He also provided crucial guidance for if a car begins to aquaplane, stating drivers should "ease off the accelerator gently to regain control."

The Hidden Dangers of Floodwater

Alicia Hempsted, a car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, highlighted the severe risks that even small amounts of water pose to vehicles. Just six inches of water can cause serious engine damage, she explained. A surprisingly small quantity, roughly equivalent to an egg cupful, can be sucked into a car's air intake, which is typically low on most vehicles and highly vulnerable during floods.

Hempsted's advice is clear: contact your insurer immediately if your car sustains flood damage.

Environmental Agency on High Alert

Ben Lukey, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, reported that minor surface water and river flooding is already ongoing in the north of England. He confirmed that Storm Claudia will bring heavy, prolonged rainfall across parts of England.

"Significant surface water flooding is probable across parts of central England on Friday, while significant river flooding impacts are also possible tomorrow and into Saturday," Lukey stated.

Environment Agency teams are actively preparing for the storm's arrival by clearing debris from watercourses and operating flood defences where necessary. They are working closely with local authorities to ensure all emergency responders are fully prepared for the significant local flood risks posed by Storm Claudia.

While the storm itself will not directly cross the UK, it is responsible for the heavy rain expected from Friday into Saturday. The system will remain largely to the west of the UK, with its associated fronts weakening throughout Saturday.
