A devastated family has paid tribute to a 19-year-old man who lost his life in a tragic road collision in Leicestershire. Rhys Hanks was a passenger in a white Vauxhall Corsa that crashed into a tree on Station Road, Great Dalby, on the evening of Wednesday, May 20.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 8:45pm, but despite their efforts, Rhys was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and continues to receive medical treatment. Two other passengers, who were in the back seat, sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening or life-changing, according to Leicestershire Police.
Family's heartfelt tribute
In a statement released through the police, Rhys's family expressed their profound grief. They said: "Rhys was an amazing, caring, loving, thoughtful and kind son, big brother and friend to so many people. There are no words to say how loved Rhys was by all his family and friends. He had so much potential ahead of him and we are proud of the young man he had become. You will be greatly missed by all your family, friends and so many more people that care for you. We are lost for words. You will always and forever be in our hearts."
Police appeal for dashcam footage
Officers from the force's serious collision investigation unit (SCIU) are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Detective Constable Emma Neeves, from SCIU, urged witnesses to come forward. She said: "I am appealing for any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward. Any information or evidence you are able to provide regarding this incident could help our ongoing enquiries. This includes anyone who saw the collision occur or who saw the Corsa beforehand."
