Tragic Motorway Incident After Police Pursuit
A 19-year-old man has died after being struck by a car on the M66 motorway, following an incident where he fled a vehicle that was being pursued by police.
The fatal collision occurred at around 9.40pm on Sunday, November 16, on the southbound carriageway. The teenager was on foot at the time he was hit.
Sequence of Events Leading to Collision
According to Greater Manchester Police, the incident began when a blue BMW X3 was spotted being driven at speed on Bury Old Road in Manchester. The vehicle then went through a red light, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.
Police later lost sight of the BMW and subsequently found it abandoned on the Junction 18 roundabout of the M60. It is believed the BMW had collided with another vehicle before being deserted.
The occupants had fled the scene on foot along the motorway, leading to the 19-year-old being struck by a Tesla. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Appeal for Witnesses and Independent Investigation
DC Ian Lawton from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) confirmed that the pursuit was initiated in accordance with policy after the vehicle failed to stop.
He stated: "The subsequent collision and tragic fatal injuries are now part of an independent review with the IOPC. We extend our condolences to the family and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward and report."
Referrals have been made to both GMP's Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
