New weather maps from WX Charts, using Met Desk data, indicate that a UK heatwave could last for five days in June, with exact start and end dates now announced. While the beginning of June is expected to be wet, temperatures are forecast to soar to 30°C by June 11, according to the GFS modelling system. The mercury is predicted to stay between the mid-twenties and 30°C until June 15.
Warmest Regions
On June 15, temperatures are expected to remain around 26°C in Greater London and parts of the south. The warmest counties are set to include Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, and Oxfordshire.
Short-Term Forecast
In the immediate term, a Met Office outlook for Tuesday, June 2 to Saturday, June 6, states: "Widespread showers today, some heavy and thundery. Early rain in the east clearing this morning, although may linger for much of the day across northeast Scotland. Otherwise widespread showers developing, with the showers heavy and thundery in places. Temperatures around average for early June."
The outlook adds that showers will ease this evening, but a few will continue overnight, mainly across the north and west. Clear spells will develop for a time, but further rain will reach western parts by dawn.
Midweek and Beyond
The Wednesday (June 3) outlook notes: "Band of rain moving eastwards throughout Wednesday, becoming slow-moving across parts of Scotland. A mix of sunshine and showers following, with heaviest showers in the north."
The outlook for Thursday to Saturday continues: "Remaining changeable throughout with further showers or longer spells of rain. Some drier and brighter interludes also developing, but temperatures on the cool side for the time of year."
Previous Heatwave Context
The late-May heatwave saw six consecutive days above 30°C in some areas, with both the spring and May maximum temperature station records exceeded by more than 2°C, highlighting an exceptional end to the season.
