Drivers in the West Midlands have been caught out by recent speed limit changes, receiving fines even when travelling under 30mph. Some motorists may have been unaware they were breaking the law, while others simply ignored the updated limits.
Speed Limit Changes Catch Drivers Off Guard
These penalties were issued for exceeding the speed limit in 20mph zones, which have become increasingly common across the country, particularly in residential areas and near schools. Motorists must adapt to these changes, as assuming a 30mph limit can lead to costly fines.
Data obtained from West Midlands Police revealed that 59 speeding offences were recorded between 20mph and 29mph last year. Officers often conduct special operations to enforce these limits, using marked police vans equipped with speed cameras that patrol areas with known speeding issues or new limits.
Importance of Checking Speed Signs
Authorities emphasise that drivers should always check for speed signs, especially in built-up areas close to schools. While some motorists argue that 20mph is too slow, officials stress that these limits are crucial for safety, particularly for children.
Birmingham City Council has reduced most main roads to 30mph and plans to install more speed cameras. This crackdown reflects a broader trend of councils taking tougher action on speeding to protect communities.
