West Midlands Metro Fares to Rise in January 2026: New Prices Revealed
West Midlands tram fares to increase from January 2026

Passengers using the West Midlands Metro tram network will see fares rise from the start of the new year. The changes, confirmed by network operators, will come into effect on Friday, 2 January 2026.

New Tram Fares: What You'll Pay

The adjustments will affect several popular ticket types. The cost of a single ticket will increase by 20p, taking the price to £2.50.

For those travelling more extensively, a peak time day ticket covering zones 1 to 4 will see a larger jump, rising by 70p to a new price of £7.60.

Regular commeters who use a monthly direct debit pass for unlimited travel will also face an increase. The monthly cost will move from £82 to £90.20.

Reasons Behind the Fare Increase

Michael Reading-Skilton, Metro’s Head of Commercial, explained the decision. He stated that the move was necessary to help the service meet rising operational expenses and ensure its long-term sustainability.

“The decision to increase fares is never taken lightly,” he said, “but these modest price rises will help us to meet increased running costs.”

He emphasised that revenue from tickets is continually reinvested into the network. Significant investment has been underway to expand the tram system, connecting more communities across Birmingham and the Black Country.

Impact on Passengers and Value for Money

The Metro argues that the tram still represents good value compared to other transport modes. Furthermore, officials pointed out that a notable group of users will be shielded from the hike.

“Nearly one in five people who use the tram with a concessionary pass will be unaffected by these changes,” Michael Reading-Skilton added.

This means that many elderly or eligible disabled passengers travelling with a pass will not have to pay the new higher fares for their journeys.
