Birmingham City FC has provided fresh details about its ambitious Sports Quarter plans that could transform east Birmingham.
Project Timeline and Stadium
The club will submit planning applications in March 2027 for The Powerhouse stadium and surrounding development on a 48-acre site in Bordesley Green. Head of infrastructure Nick Smith said construction could begin immediately after approval, with the stadium ready for the 2031/32 season.
Transport Improvements
Major transport improvements include a new train station capable of handling 12 carriages and 60,000 fans. A coach station will connect to the city centre and Curzon Street HS2 station.
A government-funded tram line will run from Birmingham city centre to the Sports Quarter and extend to Birmingham Airport. This forms part of a £2.4 billion boost to West Midlands transport.
"As a football club, we are regenerating this part of this city so we have to work hand in hand to give opportunity to develop our community," Smith said.
Community Zones
The development includes four community zones: Blues Square for retail and dining, The Market Street, The Terraces for families, and The Canal for evening entertainment. The project aims to create a global sporting and cultural destination that benefits residents year-round.
