Four New Train Stations Could Be Built in Stockport, Work on First to Start Within a Year
Four New Train Stations Planned for Stockport

Four new train stations could be built in Stockport, with work on the first set to start within a year, according to a new draft transport strategy. The strategy, published ahead of a Stockport Council meeting on June 8, aims to 'power a more ambitious, connected and sustainable future' for the borough.

New Transport Strategy for Stockport

The policy promises to make everyday journeys 'easier, safer and more reliable' through improved train, bus, tram, and active travel routes. Councillor Grace Baynham, who oversees transport services, said the strategy 'sets out how we will turn that ambition into reality' and 'create a transport system that not only meets the needs of today, but helps power a more ambitious, connected and sustainable future for Stockport.'

Key Proposals

The strategy includes seven aims to improve transport by 2042, such as a revamped Stockport station, a new railway station in Cheadle, step-free access on more platforms, and the extension of the Didsbury tramline to Stockport. The council also wants improved connections to Manchester Airport, potentially through a new east-west rapid bus transit service, and may explore extending the tram network further into the borough.

Cheadle Station Progress

The new Cheadle station, located next to Alexandra Hospital, will run services to Stockport, Manchester Piccadilly, and Chester. Despite criticism over slow progress—funding was approved in 2022 and planning permission granted in 2023—the council document states: 'Our aim is that scheme delivery will start at the station over the coming year, with TfGM expected to take over operation and maintenance once the works are completed.'

Other Potential Stations

The council also plans to investigate a new station at Stanley Green to support development in Heald Green. Historically, potential stations at High Lane and Adswood have been considered, with the latter dependent on future tram-train proposals. The document notes that a station at High Lane would impact Middlewood station.

Tram Network Extensions

On tram extensions from Didsbury, TfGM is progressing a business case, with funding from a £2.5 billion fund. Recent work suggests tram-train services between Stockport and the Airport via the mid-Cheshire line and the new Cheadle station may be possible. These plans could connect to the new Liverpool-Warrington-Manchester railway. Tram services could also run from Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple via Guide Bridge or via Bredbury.

The existing railway line between Reddish and Denton could be converted into a tramline, though this is currently considered unlikely due to low population density. However, circumstances may change as Stockport becomes better connected.

Stockport Station Redevelopment

The council aims to transform Stockport station into 'a state-of-the-art thriving transport hub' with a new eastern concourse, footbridge, Edgeley western entrance, refurbished subway, and better access. Work is progressing to fund these improvements through local transport funding.
