The Met Office has escalated its warning for power cuts to the highest level, issuing a red alert for extreme heat across 100 parts of the UK, including Birmingham, London, Salisbury, and Swansea. The warning is in effect from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday, with significant disruption expected to travel and energy supplies such as water, electricity, gas, and mobile phone services.
Risk to Life and Infrastructure
The red warning indicates a risk to life for everyone, not just vulnerable groups. The Met Office's deputy chief forecaster, Tom Crabtree, stated: "The forecast heatwave is developing into an impactful severe weather event, with record-breaking June temperatures and very high humidity. The combination of heat and humidity will be oppressive and bring impacts across society from public health and infrastructure, to power and water supplies."
Tropical Nights and Heat Stress
In addition to extreme daytime temperatures, consecutive nights are expected to remain above 20°C, a phenomenon known as a Tropical Night. Crabtree added: "This will make it very hard for people to recover from the daytime heat, exacerbating the heat stress impacts."
Affected Areas
The warning covers a wide swath of England and Wales, including but not limited to: Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Greater London, Hampshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, West Sussex, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Cardiff, Swansea, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Yorkshire.
Travel and Energy Disruption
The Met Office warns of likely significant disruption to travel, with potential impacts on roads, railways, and air travel. Energy supplies may be affected, leading to power outages and interruptions to water and gas services. The public is advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak heat.
