Tamworth Town Centre Gets £140k Smart Lighting Upgrade

Tamworth town centre is set to 'shine brighter' following a major smart lighting upgrade that will enhance safety and reduce energy consumption. Tamworth Borough Council has begun work on a £140,629 project to replace outdated lighting with modern, energy-efficient LED and smart technologies across more than 100 installations.

Key Locations and Benefits

The upgrade covers the town centre, Castle Grounds, and St Editha’s Church. The council states the new systems will provide brighter, more uniform illumination, creating welcoming public spaces for residents, visitors, and local businesses. The project started at the end of April and is expected to be completed by September 2026.

Minimal Disruption Planned

The authority is working closely with contractors to ensure minimal disruption to the public and local businesses. Plans are in place for efficient and safe project delivery, which the council describes as a significant step forward in the regeneration of the town centre.

Funding and Sustainability

Using the remaining allocation of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the council is replacing inefficient systems. Stephen Gabriel, chief executive for Tamworth Borough Council, said: 'This lighting project represents an exciting investment in both the safety and sustainability of our town centre. By upgrading to modern, energy-efficient systems, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating brighter, safer spaces for everyone to enjoy. It is a clear example of our commitment to making Tamworth a more vibrant, welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.'

Scope of Work

The project focuses on lighting assets owned and maintained by Tamworth Borough Council within the town centre and Castle Grounds. The council noted that most street lighting on roads throughout Tamworth, including many in the town centre, is owned and maintained by Staffordshire County Council. This initiative is part of the wider town centre regeneration program, reinforcing the vision for a safer, more sustainable, and economically vibrant town centre.
