Aston Villa fans are divided on whether the club should re-sign Jack Grealish from Manchester City this summer, as the club looks to reinvest part of the £117 million received from Morgan Rogers' transfer to Chelsea.
Grealish's current situation
Now 30 years old, Grealish could leave Manchester City permanently after a loan spell at Everton last season. The move started well but ended prematurely due to injury, limiting his impact at Goodison Park.
On the Claret & Blue podcast, Dan Rolinson, Mat Kendrick, and John Townley discussed the possibility of a Grealish return. Their views highlight the dilemma facing Villa: balancing sentiment with strategic squad building.
Dan Rolinson: Not on board
Dan Rolinson expressed reservations: “Even after leaving City to go to Everton last summer, I wasn't in on it either. Listen, as I've always said, if it did happen, I wouldn't be like, 'Oh, I'm going to boo him because I hate him'. I'm not on board with it. If we brought him back, I'd support it, but I think it'd be a poor move for us to go after a 30-year-old Jack Grealish.”
Mat Kendrick: Sentimental but impractical
Mat Kendrick questioned the logic: “I think the way you've got to judge it... if there was another player who was 30 years old, who had started to creak a little bit physically with the injuries he had last season, and you took the Villa connection and the sentiment out of it, would you be going for that player now? I'm not convinced we really would.”
He added: “It kind of breaks my heart a little bit because I've always been kind of pro-Grealish... I think if you got him back now, you'd probably be bringing him back for sentimental reasons. I think he's still a good player. I think he's still capable of playing in the Premier League. I'm just not sure he's capable of bringing the value we'd need for the wages he'd command.”
Kendrick also noted the financial hurdle: “If you're saying Jack Grealish would have to take a massive pay cut, while somebody else... would offer him more money, I think he'd probably still believe he can be the main man at another club and earn more while he still can.”
John Townley: Only on Villa's terms
John Townley was more open but cautious: “I said last summer that I wouldn't have been against bringing him in on loan because we needed numbers... I was more than happy to take Jack back then, but probably not this summer.”
He continued: “I understand the 'moved on' thing. I get it. You know, if Jack was available on a free and he took a huge wage cut, then yeah, why not? Let him bolster the squad. He's someone who knows the club, is obviously good in the dressing room... But no, I think we've moved on to other players now who are, firstly, younger and would probably suit us better for different reasons.”
Townley concluded: “I think one of the main reasons you'd bring him in would just be sentiment, and that isn't something we can afford to be trading on too much.”
