Babcock Announces Leadership Reshuffle Ahead of CEO's Departure

Defence giant Babcock International has announced a significant series of changes to its leadership team as the company prepares for the departure of its current chief executive. The Plymouth-based company confirmed that Harry Holt is now serving as deputy CEO, positioning him to succeed CEO David Lockwood, who is retiring at the end of 2026.

New Leadership Structure

Harry Holt, a former Army officer who joined Babcock's senior management team in November 2023, brings extensive experience from his previous role on the board of Rolls Royce. During his seven-year tenure at Rolls Royce, Mr. Holt held several senior positions, including president of the nuclear division and chief people officer, where he led a comprehensive group-wide transformation and restructuring initiative.

"I am deeply honoured to have the opportunity to lead Babcock through its next chapter," Mr. Holt stated previously. "I would like to pay tribute to David's inspirational leadership that has put Babcock on an excellent footing from which we can continue to grow and am looking forward to working with him through the transition period."

CEO's Departure and Legacy

David Lockwood, who is leaving the company at the end of the year, reflected on his time leading Babcock through challenging periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic, international geopolitical unrest, and an increased global focus on security. "It has been my privilege to lead Babcock, through a period that has seen the COVID pandemic, international geopolitical unrest and an increased focus on global security," Mr. Lockwood said. "Babcock is a unique company, it has a team of great people, with a range of important skills, alongside some of the most critical specialist infrastructure needed today."

Additional Executive Appointments

In addition to Mr. Holt's promotion, Babcock has made other key appointments within its executive committee. Neal Misell, who previously headed the company's mission systems business, has been appointed as chief executive of Babcock's nuclear division. Mr. Misell has led multiple parts of the Babcock Group both in the UK and internationally, bringing valuable experience to this critical role.

Louise Atkinson, who was most recently chief people officer, has taken up the role of chief executive of mission systems. With over 13 years in senior leadership roles at Babcock, Ms. Atkinson has extensive experience in procurement and supply chain, training, and defence equipment within the group's land business.

Following Ms. Atkinson's move, people director Jen McElhinney has been appointed as interim chief people officer, ensuring continuity in the company's human resources leadership.

Company Statement on Changes

Babcock issued a statement regarding the leadership reshuffle, emphasizing the strength and depth of its senior team. "These changes to our executive committee reflect the strength and depth of our senior team and our focus on continuing to build a sustainable, successful future," the company said.

Recent Expansion in Plymouth

This leadership announcement comes just days after Babcock revealed plans to open a massive new base in Plymouth city centre, which will accommodate approximately 2,000 staff. The new 'Capability Centre' will complement the existing operations at Devonport Dockyard and is expected to significantly increase footfall in the city centre, support local businesses and services, and provide a substantial boost to Plymouth's economy.

The engineering business stated last week that this move represents a strategic investment in the region, aligning with the company's growth objectives and its commitment to the local community.
