Craig Gardner has stepped down from his role as Director of Football at Birmingham City, leaving a vacancy that the club is now actively working to fill. Gardner, who initially joined as technical director in 2021 before being promoted in February 2025, informed the board of his desire to take a break from football at the end of last season. His departure was officially announced five weeks after the season concluded.
Club Statement on Gardner's Departure
CEO Jeremy Dale expressed gratitude for Gardner's contributions, stating: "On behalf of everyone at Birmingham City, I would like to thank Craig for his outstanding contribution to this Football Club. When Craig first spoke to me about his desire to take time away from football at the end of the season, it was clear this was not a decision he had taken lightly. He has given an enormous amount to Birmingham City throughout his career and has played a significant role in the progress we have made over recent years. I am grateful that he has remained in post to help prepare the Club for the summer and the season ahead. We fully respect Craig’s decision and wish him every success in the future."
Search for Successor Underway
The process to appoint Gardner's successor is already underway, and the club is confident it will not hinder their transfer window activities, which open later this month. High-profile names such as Dan Ashworth and Kristjaan Speakman have been linked to the role. Speakman previously served as Blues' academy manager under the previous regime. Internally, the club has the experienced Mike Rigg, who currently acts as academy technical director. Rigg has held sporting director roles at Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers, Fulham, and Burnley.
Next Steps for the New Director of Football
The incoming Director of Football will have a clear agenda, including overseeing transfers, academy development, and long-term strategy. The club aims to build on the progress made under Gardner's tenure.
